Multidisciplinary Team Series:
Trauma-informed Approach

Intended Audience

This module is intended for child abuse professionals who participate on a multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the investigation of child abuse.

MDTs are composed of representatives from law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, medical providers, mental health providers, victim advocates, forensic interviewers, and Children’s Advocacy Center staff including MDT coordinators, victim advocates, and forensic interviewers.

Purpose

By incorporating a trauma-informed approach to child abuse investigations, child abuse professionals will be able to better engage families. We encourage investigators to take a supportive approach when responding to allegations of abuse. By identifying family dynamics and any history of abuse or adversities on the front end of the investigation, the MDT will be better positioned to work with the family to address these concerns. This holistic approach and intentional engagement should result in increased cooperation throughout the investigative process, as well as a willingness to participate in therapeutic interventions, and potential court proceedings. Most importantly, it is an opportunity to support parents and caregivers so that they can better support their child.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Define trauma and its impact.
  • Identify the elements of a Trauma-Informed Approach as defined in literature.
  • Identify ways professionals can assist families address the impact of trauma;
  • Explore how the MDT can recognize bias and enhance their engagement with families; and
  • Specify ways the MDT can establish a trauma-informed culture in support of families they serve.
